Universidade de Vigo warns about the potential impact of sunscreens on the marine environment

An essay on the effects of eight sunscreen protectos on three marine species indicates that they are not completely innocous.

Due to the continuous rise in conventional plastic production and the deficient management of plastic waste, the industry is developing alternative plastic products made of biodegradable or biobased polymers. The challenge nowadays is to create a new product that combines the advantages of conventional plastics with environmentally friendly properties.

At the end of July, a collaborative sampling campaign took place between entities of two European projects financed by JPI Oceans: RESPONSE and FACTS, both focused on contamination by microplastics in marine waters. The main objective of this campaign was to compare two microplastic sampling methods at points with different degrees of contamination in the Ría de Vigo.
