New substances appear in the pellets from the Toconao spill

A second report made public by the Xunta de Galicia includes information from migration studies, which detect two new synthetic chemical substances: a phenolic antioxidant commercially called Irganox-1010 (CAS 6683-19-8) with chronic aquatic toxicity level 3 (on a scale from 1 to 4 where 1 is the highest), and an organophosphate antioxidant (CAS 31570-04-4) called Irganox-168.

Subsequently, the QANAP research group of the University of A Coruña published a report with the results of the qualitative characterization of these pellets in which the majority presence of UV622 is confirmed, and a list of 14 substances most used as plastic additives is detected, including new base hindered amine light stabilizers (CAS 4221-80-1, CAS 129757-67-1 and CAS 52829-07-9), octylphenol, and three antioxidants for which no CAS number is provided.

We are currently collecting ecotoxicological information on these substances, which for some of them are very scarce.
